Inquiry to hear from NHS Chief Executive

The Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry oral hearings this week will focus on the concerns raised about paediatric cardiac surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary between 1984 and 1995 and actions taken during the period to resolve those concerns. Witnesses addressing this subject will include Dr Phil Hammond, "MD" from the magazine Private Eye, and Senior Medical Officers (SMO) from the Department of Health (DOH).

The Inquiry will also hear evidence which will illustrate the national scene during the period of its terms of reference. Mr Paul Forrest, HM Coroner for Avon, will also come to the Inquiry this week. He will discuss the issue of post-mortems and retention of tissues.

Inquiry Focuses on Concerns and Audit

The Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry oral hearings this week will focus on concerns raised about the adequacy of paediatric cardiac surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) and will concentrate during the second half of the week on the subject of medical and clinical audit.

At the beginning of the week, Dr Stewart Hunter and Professor Marc de Leval, who together were invited to visit the BRI in 1995 to investigate concerns by the Trust management, will give evidence. The Inquiry will also hear from Professor Gianni Angelini, Professor of Cardiac Surgery, University of Bristol and Janet Maher, former General Manager, United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust (UBHT).

The remainder of the week will look at the subject of medical and clinical audit with evidence from one of the Inquiry’s Expert Group, Mr Kieran Walsh, Senior Research Fellow, University of Birmingham, and from Dr Trevor Thomas, Consultant Anaesthetist, UBHT and Mr Alan Bryan, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, UBHT.

Inquiry hears evidence from Regional Health Authority

The Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry oral hearings will hear evidence this week from former Regional Health Authority and hospital staff commenting on the Bristol services and the adequacy of the service provided.

During the week, Catherine Hawkins, former Regional General Manager, South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) and Dr Marianne Pitman, former Regional Consultant in Public Health Medicine, SWRHA, will be giving evidence to the Inquiry. They will be describing the role of the SWRHA and its responsibilities in relation to the setting up and organisation of NHS services in the region.

The Inquiry will also hear from staff from the United Bristol Health Care NHS Trust (UBHT), which manages both the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) and the Bristol Children’s Hospital (BCH). They will be addressing the subject of the adequacy of the care provided at the Bristol hospitals during the 1980s and 90s.
